Turney the Teacher

Michael L. Turney, Ph.D., ABC

Wouldn't you rather have me  teach you to do this for yourself instead of doing it for you?

"Even when I was a state government spokesperson, publication consultant, talk show host, and  multi-media planetarium producer, I was teaching,” Michael Turney says. “ In all these roles, my goal was the same as it was in the classroom: to connect with the audience – whether students, citizens, TV viewers, or museum visitors – and inform them with clear, relevant information.

"I've now opted for early retirement so I can devote more time to personal writing, photography, banjo playing, and volunteer work, but I'm still willing to tackle interesting short-term assignments and conduct workshops."

I taught public relations and mass communication for over twenty-five years and am now a professor emeritus of communication at Northern Kentucky University where I maintain Practicing Public Relations, an extensive website for students and practitioners alike, and regularly write Online Readings in Public Relations.

During the past year, I completed two short-term assignments for the U.S. Census Bureau, first as a trainer and then as a recruiter, participated in panel presentations on strategic public relations planning for the American Association of Port Authorities, coached IABC colleagues completing their accreditation, developed a website for two children’s book authors, upgraded another website for a community organization, and played banjo in 14 public performances with the Hills of Kentucky Dulcimer club.
